The Ngā Hau e Whā Māori Constituency has been elected unopposed, although voting papers do show two candidate names. The nomination of Maxine Moana-Tuwhangai, who passed away on 16 August, was formally withdrawn after the voting papers had been printed. We extend our aroha and condolences to Maxine’s whānau. Otirā, e te mareikura, moe mai rā.
Why does Maxine Moana-Tūwhangai’s name appear on my voting paper?
Maxine Moana-Tūwhangai sadly passed away on 16 August 2025, after nominations had closed and voting papers were already printed. While her nomination was formally withdrawn, it was too late to remove her name from the printed papers. We have been in contact with Maxine’s whānau and they are aware of the situation.
What does this mean for voters?
Even though Maxine’s name appears on voting papers, the Ngā Hau e Whā Māori Constituency is uncontested. This means there is no election for this Waikato Regional Council seat and voters in this constituency do not need to cast a vote.
