Abstract
This is the first baseline report of Waikato region’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions using the standard Global Protocol for Community-Scale Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventories, which is considered best practice for community based inventories.
Activities within Waikato region’s boundaries generated 13,797,097 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (t CO2e) between July 2015 and June 2016. When forestry is included, the total net emissions are 8,201,706 t CO2e. This represents about 14.5 per cent of New Zealand’s total net emissions.
The report informs the development of the Waikato region’s climate change response roadmap and will be repeated at regular intervals (3 yearly) to identify changes and to track changes in emissions generation/removal.
