Close alert

As electric vehicles (EVs) become more popular, the number of electric vehicle chargers (electric vehicle supply equipment or EVSE) needs to increase so drivers have access to safe and convenient charging away from home.

About the guidelines

Councils in the Waikato region have developed guidelines to support the future network of EVSE and charging stations on council land. The guidelines outline a regional approach to EVSE and ensure that providers are aware of council requirements and expectations for EVSE facilities in the Waikato region.

Staff from several councils in Waikato region have worked together to develop the guidelines, which include:

  • guiding principles
  • location and design considerations
  • site selection
  • site design
  • technology
  • standards and regulations
  • glossary of terms

The guidelines are primarily for organisations setting up public charging infrastructure i.e. on council land but may also be useful for organisations installing EVSE on private land. The guidelines do not include detailed information on regulations, contractual matters, or district planning rules as these will vary across the local authorities.

If you are an EVSE provider, please read the guidelines and then contact the relevant city or district council for further information.

If you are from a local authority and would like access to other relevant information, please email transport@waikatoregion.govt.nz
