Presentations on climate change

Waikato Regional Council has a guest speaker at every Climate Action Committee meeting. These presentations are recorded and can be viewed below.

Leasing from nature – by Belinda Storey

Climate change is imposing a time limit on the use of infrastructure and real estate in locations exposed to escalating hazards in Aotearoa New Zealand, such as rising sea levels. Climate economist Belinda Storey presents on the impact of escalating hazards on infrastructure, property prices and insurance availability, and the development of a new model for valuing property under climate change called “climate leases”. Belinda is the managing director of Climate Sigma and Whakahura: Extreme Events and the Emergence of Climate Change, a five year, $10-million research programme funded by MBIE.

New approaches to financing biodiversity restoration and climate action – by Dr David Hall

We need to restore our indigenous biodiversity at pace and scale to improve water quality and achieve emissions reduction and adaptation. Dr David Hall, co-founder of Mōhio’s Climate Innovation Lab, shares his ideas about innovative funding approaches to help achieve this.

Discover the fastest path to zero – by Dr Paul Winton

What are the most achievable pathways to strengthen the Waikato economy and meet our zero emissions targets? According to Dr Paul Winton of the 1point5 Project, transport is the one sector that would make biggest impact, after planting trees and reducing agricultural emissions. He presents his model for Auckland city and shows how to accelerate the decarbonisation of a transport system.
